Alva Garner was assigned to the submarine U. S. S. Pickeral which was lost sometime after leaving Honolulu for the Far East on March 22, 1943. The Pickeral has never been found. After two years the War Department presumed all were dead and set the death date given on military stone.

Naval Reserve, is missing in the performance of his duty and in the service of his country. The Department appreciates your great anxiety, but details are not now available and delay in receipt thereof must necessarily be expected to prevent possible aid to our enemies. Please do not divulge the name of this ship or station.
