John's mother died in 1902 and his Aunt 'Bid' Bridget Bowers (his mother's sister) raised him and his eight brothers and sisters.

John was a twin to Sadie.
His father died in 1923 a few years after his sisters, Sadie and Mary, came home to live after their marriages.
John and Edna Marie Brickley had a daughter: Betty Lucille (Lucille Mae) Brickley (1929-2018). Betty married Kenneth Calvin Britt Sr on December 31, 1946.
John fought with the Rainbow Division in WWI (1918) and served with the Army of Occupation until the spring of 1919. Except for his service in the Army John lived at 1021 Church St .
As a hobby he raised homing pigeons at one time as did his brother, Jim. John worked as a pressman at the News from 1919 until illness compelled him to retire in 1956. After that he did light work for the Indianapolis Parks Department. He also worked occasionally in the pressroom of the Indianapolis Times.
His brother, Mickey, came to live with John and his sisters after his divorce in 1952. John died in 1960. Mickey died in 1965. The property was bought by the highway in 1966. Sadie died in 1979 and Mary in 1980.
John died at age 66 years 2 months 3 days.
