Leona Charlotte Louis, daughter of August and Helena (Welke) Gonitzke, was born May 4, 1913, in the town of Otter Creek, Eau Claire County. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Augusta, where she was confirmed on April 1, 1928, and graduated from Augusta High School in 1932. On Feb. 25, 1935, she was united in marriage to Earl Louis of Augusta. The couple farmed in the town of Otter Creek until 1962 when they moved to Eau Claire, transferring their church membership to St. Matthew Lutheran Church. After her husband passed away in 1997, she continued to live at her home on Frostwoods Street in Eau Claire. Due to failing health she entered the Augusta Area Nursing Home in October of 2004. For many years Leona was employed in the food service department of Memorial High School.
She is survived by her sister, Elaine Schroeder of Augusta; sister-in-law, Viola Vomhof of Eau Claire; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
She also was preceded in death by her sisters, Verna and Robert Schroeder, Adele and Alvin Senske; and brothers and sister-in-law, Lorain Schroeder, Dorothea and the Rev. A.H. Ernst; niece, Diane Schroeder.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Eau Claire, with Pastor Steven Rutter officiating. Burial will be on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, in East Lawn Cemetery in Augusta.
Memorials in Leona's name can be given to St. Matthew Church or the Lutheran Hour.
