The Hamilton Grit, Hamilton, KS. Thur. Jan. 4, 1917

Smith LaRue died at St. Mary hospital in Emporia, Sunday evening, Dec. 31, 1916 at 8:00 where he had gone two weeks before for treatment. An operation for appendicitis proved of no avail, as kidney trouble brought on death speedily after it.
His son Howard LaRue and wife were with him and ministered to him affectionate care.
The body was brought home to his wife and the funeral was held at the M. E. Church Wednesday afternoon, Jan 3, 1917, in charge of services, the Hamilton Odd fellows of which lodge he was a charter member, and always a faithful worker, both in the lodge room and at the bedside of sick brothers, Rev. S. F. Beiderwell preached the funeral sermon.
It seems hardly possible that one who appeared as strong and rugged as Smith LaRue did a few short weeks ago should have gone to his final reward, but the grim reaper is no respecter of person, the young just budding into life, the strong middle aged in all their vigor, and the tottering steps of age are alike to him.
Smith LaRue was born in Allen County, Ohio, May 31, 1858. He grew to manhood there, and was married to Miss Thoran Hanson in 1875, to this union four children were born, two dying in infancy; Mrs. Lucila Clinger of Ohio, and Howard LaRue, of Hamilton surviving.
His first wife died in 1882.
In 1884 he was married to Sadie Shock. In a few years thereafter they came to Greenwood county here, and which time he (unreadable) with all the interests of Hamilton as farmer, business man and city official. He was a genial kindly man loved by all who knew him. Beside his children he is survived by his wife who is in very feeble health, two brothers and one sister namely, W. A. LaRue of Allen Co., Ohio, Obedish and Newton of Houston, Tex., one sister Mrs. Miranda Scolds of Allen Co., Ohio, and many other relatives.
His daughter Mrs. Clinger, and a brother W. A. LaRue of Lima, Ohio, came to the funeral; word could not be gotten to the other brothers.
