HERMISTON - Frederick Harold "Fred" Rankin died Saturday, Jan. 19th, 2008, at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston. He was 90. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Hermiston. Burial with military honors will follow at the Hermiston Cemetery.

Mr. Rankin was born May 25, 1917, in Willamina to Harold Gilbert and Oda Opal (Churchman) Rankin. The family moved to Ione in 1921 and to Hermiston in 1931, where he graduated from Hermiston High School in 1936. He attended Pacific University, where he attended Nationals as a member of the basketball team in 1940.

He married Betty Joyce McKenzie of Umatilla in 1941 in Hermiston. He served three years in the Army Air Corps in WW II. After the war he and Betty farmed in the Hermiston area until 1962 when he went to work for the Pendleton Grain Growers.

He retired in 1982, which gave more opportunity to pursue his great love of hunting and fishing. He was also an avid sports fan and in his earlier years participated in basketball and his favorite, baseball. He was a boardmember for the Westland Irrigation District the Umatilla Electric Co-op, served two terms for Hermiston schools, and 28 years for the Hermiston Fire District. He was a member of the Hermiston Elks Lodge and St. John's Episcopal Church in Hermiston.

Mr. Rankin is survived by daughter Vicki Lee of Hermiston; son Frederick "Rick" Rankin of Hermiston; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Betty J. Rankin, in 2001; his parents; brothers Marvin and Stewart Rankin; daughter-in-law Marie Rankin; and granddaughter Christina Marie.

Memorial contributions may be to St. John's Episcopal Church for their charity work, or to Vange John Memorial Hospice. Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is in charge of arrangements.
