Officer Mickey Gene Johnson, of Belmont, lost his life in the line of duty in the early morning hours of December 1, 1977. Officer Johnson was the first officer killed in the line of duty in Tishomingo County.

He was a son of Bonnie Goddard Johnson and the late Arlis Johnson.

Officer Johnson was shot and killed with his own weapon while attempting to stop a man who was stealing a car.

The suspect was apprehended and sentenced to life in prison.

Officer Johnson had served with the Belmont Police Department two years.

In September of 2011, the Mississippi State Legislature designated a portion of MS-25 in his home as the Mickey Gene Johnson Memorial Highway.
