Enlisted and mustered in as a substitute on 25 August 1864 at Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, Company D, Michigan 21st Infantry Regiment as a Private at 19 years of age; died of disease (acute diarrhea) on 3 February 1865 in the General Hospital at Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. Originally interred at Laurel Grove Cemetery, Section 1123, in Savannah with that record showing a date of death as 4 February 1865 and burial occurring the following day. His remains were subsequently removed and reinterred at the Beaufort National Cemetery in South Carolina.
