Ann was employed as head cook at Geneva Beach Hotel and other coffee shops in Alexandria in the 1920 and 1930s. From 1942 to 1952 Ann and Melvin lived in Bremerton, Washington. The couple later moved back to Holmes City and bought the Sandberg home farm. Ann became the first ever cook at Douglas County Hospital. After retirement, Ann lived in Bethel Manor in Alexandria for many years. When Ann became ill, she moved to Crestview Manor in Evansville and later Bethany Home.
Ann died on Feb. 15, 2000 at the age of 89. She is survived by four sons: Dale and wife Marlys Nicholas of Hoffman; Gerald and wife Andria Nicholas of Menefee, CA; Randall and wife Linda Nicholas of Alexandria; Bruce and wife Helen Nicholas of Rochester; two daughters: Andria and husband Virgil Hinnenkamp of Verona, KY; Karen and husband Steve Sarasin of Anchorage, AK; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and brother Arthur Sandberg of Aurora. Ann was preceded in death by her parents; husband Melvin in 1982; brothers: Gustav, William, Anton, Richard, Edward; and sisters: Ellen, Elma (Mickey) and Martha.
A funeral service was held on February 19, 2000 at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Reverent Denise Croskey officiating. Interment was at the Christian Union Cemetery in Holmes City township. Pallbearers included Virgil Hinnenkamp Travis Hinnenkamp, Douglas Sandberg, Kenneth Ruble, Randall Nicholas and Michael Nicholas. Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home, Alexandria.
