Robert Moss was born 11 Oct 1821 in Newton, Slaidburn, Yorkshire, England. He was the second son born to Hugh Moss and Elizabeth "Betty" (Rushton) Moss. He was raised on a leased farm, as was common in those days. When Robert became a man he also leased and managed a farm. He visited his parent's home each weekend and took back home some of his mother's cooking. She often baked several mince meat pies and put them in a small wooden tub to keep for Robert. His father was a church warden in the Parish Church, Slaidborne. It was in this church where Robert was christened and baptized into the Church of England. Robert was a young adult when the elders from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came preaching the restored gospel in Preston, England. Many of Robert's aunts and uncles from both the Moss and Rushton sides of the family listened to the elders preach the gospel and were later baptized into the church. Robert and his older brother were also taught the gospel and were baptized into the church. When Robert was 30 years old he decided to gather with church members in America. He traveled with an uncle on the ship "Ellen". He left England in 1851. There were several crises that occured while on the rugged ship, and then later while crossing the plains. Upon reaching the Salt Lake Valley Robert thought he might want to rest and go on to California. He stayed with his brother, John Moss in Bountiful. He met a beautiful girl with long red hair and he fell in love. Her name was Mary Buys, also a pioneer. They were married Christmas Day, 25 Dec 1853. They settled in east Bountiful and built a two room log cabin with space for additional rooms to be made out of large rocks. Robert and Mary were happy, true and faithful to each other! They had 12 children together. He owned a saw mill business and an apple orchard (now Orchard Dr.). Robert was a sincere, kindly man. He preferred the quiet home life. His foremost ambition was to provide for Mary and the children. He helped to build the Salt Lake Temple and the Bountiful Tabernacle. After Mary died seemingly too early, he was left to re-organize the family. The older children took their turn in the work. He never left his remaining 10 young children home alone! He was highly respected for the way he raised his children. He was hardworking and a strong believer in prayer. Inscription

Farewell, Father, thou hast left us
And our loss we deeply feel
But tis God that hath bereft us
He can all our sorrows heal.
