Stephen Chandler was born in Canada, and was married in Austin to Abigail Mehatable Richardson. They came to Lyle township at an early date, and where their daughter, Lania, now Mrs. Frank P. Dawes, was born, March 28, 1862. In that same year, Stephen Chandler joined the Union army, served in several important engagements, and was finally captured and imprisoned in Andersonville, where he was starved to death by his cruel captors.
His widow came to Austin later and was married to I. J. B. Wright.

Also have a copy of "Special orders" dated Sept 241863 which reads: Private Stephen Chandler of Co C9th Minn vol, has leave of absence until the 3rd of Oct 1863 at which time he will report to Major Wm. Markham 9th Minn vols at Winona, Minn. by Alex Willin, Col command---Reg---. Austin mower co minn historical soc has letter.
A copy of a page from family bible, sent by the Mower Co Historical Society lists that Stephen died a prisoner 5 months at Andersonville. Died at a rebel prison at Millan, Ga. Oct 31st 1864.
A plaque was placed in the "DAWES" plot as a memorial from his daughter, Amy Delania Chandler Dawes at Oakwood Cemetery, Austin Mower Co Minn. We found this when visited the cemetery in Oct 2002 and were quite overwhelmed that Amy would have done this. What a wonderful daughter! He died when she was abt one year old.

Stephen N. Chandler body was moved from Millen National Cemetery, Georgia in 1868 (from Roll of Honor #XIV.) He is layed to rest with Honors at Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort SC. Section 41 grave 4804 Under Mn Section.
