On May 29, 1932, Ammann was named as the First Abbot Ordinary of Ndanda, and on December 11, 1933, Bishop of the Titular See of Petnelissus, receiving his episcopal consecration, from Bishop Joseph Kumpfmüller, assisted by Archbishop Raymund Netzhammer OSB., and Bishop Joseph Ambühl, on March 11, 1933.
Resigning his office on December 15, 1949, he returned the Germany but later moved the Freiberg, Switzerland, in 1949, where he resided until 1958, when he moved again to Germany, in Münsterschwarzach, where he died at the age of 83, on August 19, 1981.
