Joseph Baldwin was the son of Richard Baldwin and Isabel Harding Baldwin of Cholesbury,Buckinghamshire.

He married, first, Hannah Whitlock, on Nov 10,1636 at High Wycombe, Co.Bucks England.

With his wife, he immigrated to New England with his two brothers, Nathaniel Baldwin and Timothy Baldwin.

The three brothers came to New Haven first and then to Milford where they received homelots and settled. Joseph & Hannah were the parents of four sons and five daughters. Hannah died in 1661, and the next year he removed to Hadley, Mass. He was a freeman there in 1666 and married his second wife, Isabella Ward, widow of John Catlin and James Northam. By her first marriage, Isabella was the mother of John Catlin Jr. Joseph married, third, Elizabeth Gibbons, widow of Luke Hitchcock and William Warriner.

The stone on the bridge over the Wepawaug River in Milford (pictured right) honoring him as a founder gives his death date as 1690. "Families of Early Guilford, Conn." gives his death date as November 2, 1684 in Hadley.

Children(by first marriage): Joseph Baldwin Jr, Benjamin Baldwin, Hannah Baldwin Hull, Mary Baldwin Catlin, Elizabeth Baldwin Warriner, Martha Baldwin Hawks, Jonathan Baldwin, David Baldwin, and Sarah Baldwin Bartlett.

Though there have been a few dates given in sources as his date of death, his probate papers state that he died 3 Nov 1684. Other dates in the document are: Original will - 20 Dec 1680; Will revision - 30 Oct 1684; Probate date - 8 Nov 1684.
