The sudden taking off of this prominent christian gentleman is a shock to the community in which be has constantly been a somewhat striking figure for more than a quarter of a century, during which time he has been looked upon as one of our large business men, and who made his business a success. His career as a merchant was in Liberty, but a very short time previous to his death, he changed his place of business from Liberty to Gloster. Mr. Raiford was ever zealous in the advocacy of whatever measure be thought right, was of strong convictions and nerve above ordinary men; was aggressive in his efforts to suppress evil in whatever form presented, and especially was he the advocate and friend of temperance in all its blessings, and in every form in which he could further the cause, he did so. He was an active, zealous and consistent member of the Methodist church, and wielded quite a wide influence among his brethren of that denomination up to the moment of his death. He was stricken down in the Methodist church at Gloster while at prayer meeting, in which he had taken a leading part, and had just closed an exhortation to his hearers upon the subject of being ready at all times for the messenger of death, which seemed standing by waiting for him to close his address. Mr. R. was elected and served one term in the State Legislature as Representative from Amite county. He was a faithful member of the Masonic fraternity, and was buried by his brethren of the order. We do not know how old he was, but he was in the decline of life, perhaps nearing 60 years of age. Many tears were shed for him, and he will be long remembered. May the earth press gently upon his bosom.
