Served with 2nd Iowa Vol. Cavalry in Civil War. Participated in Battle of Franklin, TN and Battle of Nashville in late 1864. Following battle of Nashville, 2nd IA Cav were in pursuit of retreating Confederate Army and J.H. Givens was captured south of Franklin on Dec. 17. He was taken to Andersonville Prison in Georgia at year end. He was released via a prisoner exchange on April 10, 1865. Following the War, James spent rest of his life farming in Decatur County. He is buried next to his 2nd wife, Emily. His 1st wife, Elizabeth, died in 1896.
