Former Sheriff of Whitley County Dies in Missouri - Frank P. Allwein, former sheriff of Whitley County, died at Chaffee, Mo., 2nd June, according to a message received here today. The message contained no details as to the cause of death. Mr. Allwein was 72 years old, & was born in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. In 1861 he enlisted with Company G, 5th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and after his term expired, he enlisted in the 127th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Mr. Allwein saw active service in Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, besides many raids, skirmishes, etc. After his discharge, he returned to his old home & engaged in saw milling. He was a blacksmith in Larwill until he was elected sheriff in 1880 on the democratic ticket. He's survived by Mrs. Sam Ruch of Chaffee, Mo.; Mrs. E.H. Lieb of Indianapolis, & 3 brothers. Mr. Allwein will be remembered as the only Whitley county sheriff who ever conducted an execution of a man for murder. In 1883, Mr. Allwein, was the executioner when Charles Butler was hanged for the murder of Mrs. Butler at their home near Pierceton. The case was venued to this county.

The funeral of the late Francis P. Allwein was held Thursday
forenoon at the home of Henry Nuxall. Rev. Hoshour officiating and interment was made in the Masonic Cemetery. The pallbearers were: H.A. Shumaker, J.R. Harrison, James Bodley, John W. McNabb, Marion Egolf, and W.A. Clugston.
