Christian Bernhardt Houtwed, one of six children of Nels Houtwed and Ollie Petersen Houtwed, was born on a farm near Ruskin, Nebraska, October 3, 1912. Chris passed away May 9, 1984, in Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital, Superior, at the age of 71 years, 7 months and 6 days.

He was baptised and confirmed in Bethany Lutheran Church. Chris spent his entire life in the Ruskin area. He attended school at District 29 thru the 9th grade and attended Ruskin High School for a short time. His entire adult life was spent as a farmer/stockman, starting as a renter in 1933.

December 31, 1933, he was married to Vita Ann Goldbeck. To this union two children were born. They began investing in land as soon as they could and with each purchase of land, conservation improvements were made. Soon after they got into the cattle business which lead to another sidelines, trucking.

After the death of his wife, Vita, in 1975, he realized his own health problems and recognized his limitations and began his retirement.

He has served on the Ruskin School Board and Bethany Church Council.

On March 3, 1979, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, he was married to Crystal Burge. They made their home in Ruskin until April 1984 when they purchased a home in Superior.

Chris was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, Vita, an infant brother, Aaron, and sister, Lydia, and a sister, Agnes Thayer.

Those left to mourn his passing and cherish his memories are his wife, Crystal of Superior; his daughter, Janette and her husband, Verlan Mussmann of Ruskin; his son, Allan, and his wife, Karen, of York; a step-son and his wife, Don and Dianne Burge of Salem, Missouri; a step-daughter and her husband, Cathy and Gordon Harper of Worland, Wyoming; one brother, Jens Houtwed of Hastings; one sister, Elen Larsen of Kearney; four grandchildren, David Mussman, Angela Johnson and Brian and Debora Houtwed; 6 step-grandchildren, Cindy, David and Angie Burge and Bruce, Melanie and Dusty Harper; 3 great grandchildren, Kristi, Kelly and Trendon Mussmann; and a step-great granddaughter, Nichole Harper.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 12, at 2 p.m. from Bethany Lutheran Church in Ruskin, with Pastor Jeffrey Chubb and Pastor Richard Kelderhouse officiating. Burial was in Spring Creek Cemetery, Ruskin. Arrangements were by Megrue-Price Funeral Home, Superior.

Music was provided by Gordon Harper, Bruce Harper, Marlene Mills and the congregation, accompanied by organist, Hildegarde Hansen.

Casketbearers were Steve Houtwed, Bob Houtwed, David Houtwed, Kevin Houtwed, Bruce Harper and Bill Rogers. Honorary pallbearers were Denny Lipker, George Hansen, Carl Genzmer, Leslie Hale, Elmer Giger, Kenneth Duncan, Fred Huffman, Jim Hughes, Pete Block, John Debus and Don Kottmeyer.

Chris Houtwed's funeral Saturday.

Chris Houtwed, 71, Superior, died last Wednesday in Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital.

Services were Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Bethany Lutheran Church, Ruskin, with the Revs. Jeffrey Chubb and Richard Kelderhouse officiating. Burial was in the Spring Creek Cemetery, Ruskin.

Houtwed was a lifelong farmer and stockman in the Ruskin area. He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church and a former member of the church council. He was a past member of the Ruskin School Board.

Survivors are his wife, Crystal; one daughter, Mrs. Verlan Mussman (Janette), Ruskin; one son, Allan, York; one step-daughter, Mrs. Gordon Harper (Cathy), Worlund, Wyo.; one step-son, Don Burge, Salem, Mo.; one brother, Jens, Hastings; one sister, Mrs. Malvern Larsen (Ellen), Kearney; four grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; three great grandchildren and one step great grandchild.
