R. W. was the first of six children, and the first of three sons, of John H. Barnett and Mahala J. Henson. R. W. was married to Elizabeth Keane on July 29, 1875 in Rockbridge, Illinois. R. W. and Lizzie had the following children: William H. Barnett, Theodore Barnett, Orval P. Barnett, Isaac J. Barnett, Arthur R. Barnett, Edgar H. Barnett, Marguerite E. Prather, Samuel Barnett, Earl B. Barnett, and Agnes S. Darling Savage. After Lizzie's death, R. W. married Sarah Monroe in 1912.
