She attended Milfay schools and when she was fifteen years old, she married her husband, Joe Lee Coppinger. They were married for fifty-three years until Joe Lee's death in 1989. They had five children, Jimmie, Jesse, Susie, Linda, and Velma.
Both Bonita's and Joe Lee's ancestors came to Indian Territory from the eastern Cherokee nation during the westward trek.
