Enlistment Age-18.

Enlisted: Nov 23,1862 at Camp Howe.PA. Bugler

Mustered into Co "A" 18th PA Cavalry

Circumstances of his death were captured in a diary entry, dated March 17-18, 1864, by Private Isaac Scherick of Company A:
"Our company went on picket at Grove Church. At 11 p.m. Sargent woke me up to go out on vidett. I put up a protest as I had been out all the night before [on picket] and would be very difficult for me to keep from going to sleep. He said it could not be helped as every available man was on duty. [Private Andrew] Wilson offered to go in my place if I would let him have my carbine (he being Bugler did not carry any arms but a revolver). He was not out an hour until he was shot with poisoned slugs from a shot gun by one of those old F.F.Vs [First Families of Virginia a derogatory comment on native Virginians] who are old crippled men around barns during the day and a skulking Bushwhacker at night, one slug going in his wrist and another in the side of his neck."

Andrew Wilson died from these wounds in Armory Square Hospital, Washington, D. C. on April 1, 1864 at Washington, DC.

By 18th Regimental History, he is listed wounded March 18, 1864 at Grove Church, VA.

Some records list him wounded, January 18, 1864,(with no place stated.)

Several of Wilson's letters are maintained at the F. Ray Risdon Collection of Lincolniana and American Political Life, Special Collection Department, Mary Norton Clapp Library, Occidental College, CA.
