Stella Marie Karren, 98, passed away Aug. 28, 2008. She was born in Manila on April 19, 1910, to Elizabeth Bromley and William Colman Boren. Elizabeth was his second wife, and Stella had six half-brothers and two half-sisters. She had five sisters, Ellen (Herring), Ethel (Kelly), Eva (Trujillo), Anne (Noyes) and Verley (Baker). Verley is the youngest and only surviving sister. They moved to Tridell when Stella was five years old.

When Stella was 14, her father died after complications from a wreck in the Highline Canal. From that time, she was pretty much on her own, boarding with many different families to put herself through high school.

In the spring of 1928, she moved in with Eva and Louie John Siddoway. She completed her junior year while living with the Siddoways, staying until the June 25, 1927 conference, where Apostle Joseph Fielding Smith spoke and Dr. David E. Smith sang solos. Dr. Smith had been a mission companion of Eva Siddoway, and she invited him to Sunday dinner. When they arrived at the Siddoway home, Stella was busy fixing dinner and tending the family's children. He asked Stella if she would consider coming to Salt Lake and staying with his family. His wife had a new baby and was afraid of staying home alone while he was out on medical calls at night. Eve thought that would be a wonderful experience for Stella. She jumped at the chance, packed her bag and went to Salt Lake with Dr. Smith and Joseph Fielding Smith, who later became President of the Latter-Day Saints Church.

She attended school during her senior year at East High School while staying with the Smith family. She came back the next fall and stayed with the Sam Hatch Sr. Family. She dated Victor Karren during this time, and they were married on Jan. 7, 1929.

Vic had a ranch on Blue Mountain where he took his bride after they were married. Later they had two children, Dick (Carolyn) Karren and Doris (Tory) Burton. They spent the summers on the Colorado ranch and the winters in Vernal. The Karrens retired from the ranch in 1963 and toured the world, square dancing with their lifelong friends Opal and Roy Showalter. They purchased a home in Mesa, Ariz., spending the winters there and the summers in Vernal.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vic, in 1990. She then lived next door to her daughter, Doris, until she was 92 at which time she broke her hip and went into the Uintah Care Center.

Stella is survived by her two children, Dick of California and Doris of Vernal; five grandchildren, Kim and Julie Burton, Wayne, Margie and Rick (Virgina) Karren; great-grandchildren, Brandon (Danette) Brooks, Brooke (Steve) Macias, Mandy (Brett) Lane, Marcelina and Lisa Diaz, Brian, William and James Victor Karren; great-great-grandchildren, Brayden and Brennen Brooks and Quayd Lane.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 30. Interment was in the Vernal Memorial Park.
