JACK H. REID Passed away December 12, 2003. He was 90. Mr. Reid was born and raised in Bandana, Kentucky, a small town near Paducah. He graduated from high school with high grades especially in math but due to the great depression was unable to finish his college education. He joined the Navy in 1933 and in 1937 began his flight training in Pensacola, Florida, graduating as a Naval Aviation Pilot in 1938. Following graduation he was assigned to the Naval Air Station Sand Point, Washington. During which time he attended classes at the University of Washington and obtained a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from LaSalle Extension University of Chicago. He had a distinguished military career as a naval pilot flying a number of different aircraft including patrol bombers and fighter planes during World War Two and Korea. During one patrol mission on June 3, 1942 he spotted the Japanese Fleet 800 miles from Midway Island. His sighting gave Admiral Nimitz and the Fleet Commanders the advance notice to successfully defend their position on Midway. As a result of his heroism and extraordinary achievement he received a Distinguished Flying Cross and a Citation from the President of the United States. Following World War two he was assigned to the VP Squadron where he flew many dignitaries including Admiral Radford, Admiral Halsey, The Secretary of the Navy, Madame Chiang Kai-shek and a host of other congressional leaders and other dignitaries. After his duty with many squadrons, he was assigned on the Staff of Com-Flog Wing Pac and before retiring he worked on the operational Staff of Admiral Radford, Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet. Mr. Reid retired after twenty five years as a Navy Captain. A picture of he and his crew is displayed in the exhibit of the Battle of Midway in the National Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian Institute. He was also a panelist on two symposiums, one at the National Air and Space Museum on the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Midway. Following his military service Mr. Reid moved to the Bay Area where he worked as a Real Estate Broker and Developer. He also attended a local junior college and the University of California at Berkeley where he became a life member of the California Alumni Association and a member of Who's Who in California. He retired to Rio Del Mar where he enjoyed living near the ocean and frequent rounds of golf. He is survived by his wife, Ina Mae Reid of Aptos and Jim Reid of Redding; sister, Berah McKinney of Michigan; also survived by a grandson, Jim Reid of Sonoma and two great grandsons. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Steve Reid in 1991. A memorial services will be held at St Andrew Presbyterian Church 9850 Monroe Ave., Aptos Ca. Thursday December 18, at 2:30 p.m. Prior to the memorial a graveside service including military honors will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery 2271 7th Ave., Santa Cruz Thursday at 1:00 p.m. Friends are invited to call at Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel 1050 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz, Ca. Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers contributions are preferred to V.F.W. Post 10110, Relief Fund, P.O. Box 928, Aptos, Ca. 95001 or St Andrew Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 9850 Monroe Ave, Aptos, Ca. 95003.
