Mary Barbara Schmidt, 71, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 1991 at Hays Medical Center. She was born Dec. 27, 1919 at Victoria, the daughter of Clemens and Catherine Stang Hammerschmidt.

A lifetime Hays resident, she was a homemaker. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Eagles Auxiliary, both of Hays.

On May 30, 1939 she married Elmer Schmidt at Hays. He died in 1985.

Survivors inlcude, four sons, Elmer and Thomas, both of Hays, Terrance of Oklahoma City, and Melvin of Beloit; six daughters, Dorothy Bouleware of Oakley, Glenda Raye of Golden Valley, Minn., Chloe Peters of Wichita, Barbara Pursen of Fayetteville, Ark., Phyllis Pentecost of Cedar, and Christine Purdy of Hays; a brother, Elmer Hammerschmidt of Garden City; five sisters, Hubertine Stecklein of Denver, Albina Schmidt of Plainville, Helen Breshaw of Wichita, Evelyn Henry of Pratt, Delores Mermis of Russell; 26 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Parish wake will be at 8 p.m. today at Hays Memorial Chapel, Hays. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays, with Father Carl Kramer presiding at both services. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. today and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the chapel.
