Joseph was born in Cartsruhe, Stadt Kartsruhe, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany to Johann Michael Anselment (1779-1845) and Franziska Reiling Anselment (1779-1845)

Joseph married Catherine Zuck (1821-1851), Feb 6, 1839 in Marion, Ohio and they had the following children:

In 1866, at age 50, Joseph, his wife and children moved to Nodaway Township, Holt County, Missouri and bought 560 acres of land, part of which included the confluence of a small tributary of Nichol's Creek. He built and ran the Nichols's Grove Mill for many years. It was a flourishing mill doing both large custom and merchant work. Joseph Anselment and the Nickell's Mill are an important part of Holt County history.
