Bandy Child Dies Suddenly of Poisoning

Funeral services for Karla Jean Bandy, 18 months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Bandy, Louisville, were held at the family home this afternoon at 2 o'clock.

The Rev. Walter A. Page of Massena conducted the services, citing comforting passages of Scripture. Many friends, relatives and neighbors attended the services or called at the home to express their heart-felt sympathy. There were many floral pieces.

The child died at about 6:20 Tuesday night, March 2, 1948 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Humes on Maple Street. Death was due to accidental strychnine poisoning.

The Bandy family was visiting at the Humes home Tuesday afternoon. Suddenly it was discovered that the child had found some medicinal tablets and was feeding them to the dog. A smudge on the lips indicated that he baby had eaten some of the small pills.

She was rushed to Massena Memorial Hospital. Dr. Ralph D. Samets, who happened to be at the hospital at that time, immediately pumped out the child's stomach several times. The contents were slight. In the meantime, Dr. Philip Mardon, who had dispensed the tablets for adult use, was located and he said they contained quantities of strychnine.

The child seemed to suffer no ill effects, appeared to be normal, and the parents took her back to the Humes home. However, within two or three hours convulsions developed and the child died. It was apparent that the poison had been absorbed by the blood stream before the stomach was pumped out, thus nothing could be done to avert the fatal effects. She did not appear sick until the convulsions developed. It had been hoped that the child had not actually swallowed any of the poison and there were grounds for such hope in that the child did not seem ill.

The child was born in Massena Memorial Hospital September 30, 1946, and was the only child of Clarence and Lorraine Boardman Bandy.

Surviving are her parents; four grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Bandy of Louisville and Mr. and Mrs. F.C. Boardman of Ticonderoga, and a great-grandmother, Mrs. Jesse Stickney of Ticonderoga.
