Josephine Burton Bagley died June 18, 1989 in Orem UT.
Funeral services were held June 22 in the Afton 2nd LDS Ward under the direction of Bp. Val Call.
She was born Dec 23, 1890 to Sarah Ann Fielding and William Walton Burton at their ranch home on Swift Creek northwest of Afton.
Josephine grew had many memories of LDS General Authorities and representatives of the Wyoming state government who frequently stayed at their home. Her father founded the Burton Mercantile and the Burton Creamery.
During her school years, Josephine spent the winters in Utah where she graduated from the eighth grade in Logan in 1906 and from Weber Academy now Weber College in 1910. She then attended Utah State University, graduating in 1913 with a degree in home economics.
She taught home economics at Star Valley High School during the 1916 school year. She then served as a home demonstration agent for Utah County in Provo from 1917-18.
Her marriage to William Lester Bagley was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on April 3, 1918. They had four children. The first 15 years of their marriage were spent in Etna where they farmed and Lester served as game warden. In 1938 the family moved to Cheyenne where Lester served first as State Game Warden and later as State Game and Fish Commissioner. They lived in Cheyenne until 1956 when Lester accepted the position of assistant director of the Fish and Wildlife Service in Washington D.C.
Following Lester's death in 1978 Josephine continued to reside in Salt Lake City. She suffered an incapacitating stroke in September 1987. Her last years where spent with her son, Dean and in a care center in Orem UT.
She was an avid genealogist for many years. To her immediate family she was always a source of strength and encouragement.
She was a member of the American Association of University Women, the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and active in church and community affairs, serving in many responsible positions throughout her long life. She continued to serve as a visiting teacher until she was 96 years of age.
Her life exemplified the virtues of love, patience, understanding, courage, kindness and wisdom.
She is survived by her three children; William Burton Bagley Afton; Sarah Bagley Shumway, Cheyenne; and Dean Burton Bagley, Provo; 23 grandchildren; 75 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her daughter LeNore Bagley Lewis.
