Asahel was a blacksmith, like his father and grandfather before him. He made iron rims for wagon and carriage wheels, and in the fall of 1843 he opened the 'A. A. Justin Wagon Shop' which he kept for the rest of his life. The 1880-81 Western New York Gazetteer and Business Directory states that the Wagon Shop was a manufacturer of Steam Engines, Machinery, Iron Roofing and Bridge Work, with Heavy Platform Spring & Grain Wagons a specialty.
