Mrs. Shaffer was born Jan. 21, 1921, in Kentucky. She lived in Virginia for a period of time prior to moving to Baltimore in the early 1940s to work as a welder at a shipyard in Curtis Bay. Subsequently she worked for Read's Drugstore and Food Fair supermarkets which became Pantry Pride, from which she retired in 1971.
She was an active member of South Shore Baptist Church. Her interests included traveling to Las Vegas, playing cards, cooking, tending to her flowers and fishing.
Her husband, Richard Shaffer, died in 1976. She was the sister of the late Otis and Walter Dotson.
Surviving are three daughters, Sheila Freeman of Annapolis; two sons, James "Buddy" Freeman of Arden on the Severn; one brother, Noah "Dale" Dotson of Westminster; one sister, Jackie Serio of Brooklyn Park; 17 grandchildren; 25 greatgrandchildren; and six greatgreat-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 7 to 9 tonight and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 951 Annapolis Road, Gambrills, where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Meadowridge Cemetery in Elkridge.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108.
