John was the son of William Hopkins and Sarah 'Sallie' Snyder Hopkins. He enlisted in the Confederate army on March 1, 1862, a member of the 'Stokes Boys' of the 22nd Regiment, NC Troops. He was captured twice and confined to Point Lookout, Maryland, each time. He was released after taking an Oath of Allegiance to the United States
on June 27, 1865.
