James Douglas Graham – Obituary
James Douglas Graham, son of James and Angeline Graham, was born near Waverly, Ohio, May 12, 1859, and passed away March 4, 1944, at the age of 84 years, 9 months and 21 days. He moved to Windsor, Mo., with his parents in 1882. He was married to Carrie Hibbard December 28, 1887, at Windsor. To the union were born seven children, six sons and one daughter. The family moved to Hepler, Kansas in 1903 and lived there until seven years ago, when Mr. Graham moved to Chilhowee, with his son, Floyd, where he has since resided. His wife preceded him in death 28 years. She died January 30, 1916. He leaves six sons, F.L Graham of the home, Chilhowee; L.C. Graham of Leeton, J.E. Graham of New Franklin, R.Y. Graham of Nevada, C.F. Graham of Hepler, Kansas, and J.H. Graham of Colorado Springs, Colorado, one daughter, Mrs. Ruby Huber, of Hepler, Kansas, and one sister Mrs. Laura Beaman of Windsor, also 15 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
He was a member of the A.F. and A.M. Lodge No. 398 of Hepler, Kansas.
Funeral services were held from the Hepler Methodist Church. Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. C.E. Nickerson of Chilhowee officiating. The Church was filled to capacity with relatives and friends. The minister read from the 90th Psalm and took his text from the 23rd Psalm. He read the obituary and paid fitting tribute to the deceased, closing with Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar," and prayer.
Hepler Masonic Lodge No. 398. Gave the ritualistic burial services with Hugh Osburn as Worshipful [--ster,] and F.L. Thomas as chaplain assisted by members of the lodge. Pallbearers were selected from members of his lodge.
Beautiful sprays of flowers were banked about the casket and covered the rostrum. The family piece marked "Dad," rested upon the casket. Music was furnished by Ruth Hedges, Louise Lempy, Ruth Neil Boyd and Doris Limton, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Peterson.
Interment was in the family lot in the Hepler Cemetery, Hepler, Kansas.
