In order to put himself through college, Herb worked at Quimby's Awnings and Venetian Blinds where he met his future wife, Margaret Hubbard. In 1940, Herb joined the Navy where he became an officer and spent 5 years in the service during World War II. In December of 1942 Herb, while on leave, returned to Reno and married Margaret.

Following his release from service, Herb returned to Reno and again went back to work at Quimby's. Herb and Margaret had their first child, Tom in 1946 and their second son, Rob in 1952. In 1958 Herb decided to open his own business which became Herbs Awning and Drapery. Along with running his business, Herb and one of his brothers, Fred, built and managed numerous homes and properties in the Reno/Sparks area. Herb was a long time member of the Reno Elks Lodge and the Kiwanis Club of Reno. He loved working outdoors and in his free time enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time at Lake Tahoe and traveling with his wife and family.

He left a lasting impression on everyone he spoke with and raised the spirits of everyone he came in contact with. His family is blessed, honored and humbled by all of his sacrifices and accomplishments and the wonderful life he provided.

Herb was blessed in his last few years to be able to spend a lot of time with his niece, Nancy Reynolds, who helped to love and care for him. Everyone in the family would like to express their deepest gratitude for all of her help and for all the time she spent with Herb. She made the last few years very special for him.
