Paul Fenimore Cooper, although possibly better known as the son of the novelist James Fenimore Cooper, attained considerable distinction in the law, having handled successfully many cases.
Mr. Cooper was born in New York City and when an infant accompanied his father to Europe, remaining until nine years of age. He was a graduate of Hobart College, which at the time was conducted by Bishop DeLancy, his uncle. He studied law at Harvard Law School and with the law firm of McMartin and Jenkins in Albany. In 1850 he became a member of the firm, from which Mr. McMartin withdrew in 1854.
The firm was the attorney for the Van Rensselear patroon's estate and had mcuh to do with the rent troubles in Albany, Rensselear and Schoharie Counties. The legal records of that section show the active part taken by the firm in that historic rent struggle.
In June 1855, Mr. Cooper married Miss Mary Fuller Barrows, a daughter of the Rev. Eleanor Storrs Barrows.
