PIONEER OF COUNTY DIES, WAS NEAR 90
Matt Shimek, Kellnersville, Resident Here 68 Years
TAPS SOUND FOR AGED WAR VETERAN
"Matthew Shimek, Civil War veteran and a pioneer resident of Manitowoc County, died at his home at Kellnersville yesterday afternoon, and the funeral will be held from St. James Church at Kellnersville, Rev. Braun officiating, Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. Mr. Shimek's death was due to infirmities of age.

"Mr. Shimek was one of the earliest settlers of Manitowoc, having come here in the forties and for 68 years he had made his home here, witnessing the development of the county from a wilderness to one of the best agricultural districts in the northwest. He had contributed his share to this work and was well and favorably known, and universally respected.

"Born in Bohemia in 1825, Mr. Shimek came to America as a young man of 21 and immediately settled in this county where he was for many years and up to the time of his retirement, because of his age, prominent as a farmer.

"When the Civil War broke out Mr. Shimek enlisted in the Union ranks and served for two years and nine months, being honorably discharged. Returning to Kellnersville he again resumed farming.

"Mr. Shimek is survived by an aged widow and eleven children, eight sons and three daughters, Joseph, of South Milwaukee, Frank and Emil of Kellnersville, Matthew, Jr., Mechalsville, Adolph of Milwaukee, John, Jacob and Peter of Rockwell and Mrs. Mary Holeck of South Milwuakee, Mrs. Anna Hodek of Saxon, Wis., Mrs. Mary Soulek, of Branch."
