A Letter Sent Home:

"May the 30, 1864 Camp near Kingston Gorge

Fair Mother,

This day I seat myself to write you a few lines to let you know that I am well at this time, truly hoping when these few lines come to hand they may find you all well and doing well. I can inform you that I received a letter from you today and I was glad to hear from home one time more and hear that you was all well. I can inform you that we have had a hard march. We marched ten days in succession. Times is hard here, but we have plenty to eat such as it is. There has been hard fighting here the last fifteen days and is yet going on. We have lost a heap of men in this battle, killed and wounded. We have killed and captured thousands of them. We have drove them about fifty miles since the fighting commenced. We haven't been in the fight yet, but we are looking to be ordered up any minute. I can inform you that the Third and Sixth and Eighth Tenn regiment has been cut all to pieces in the fight. Captain Ausmus was wounded slightly, Lieut. Ahern(?) wounded in the leg and I feared that he had to have it cut off. But I have not seen myself I have not seen any none of the Tennessee troops. The(?) of our wounded is good at this time. They are running the wounded to Nashville, Tennessee as fast as they can get them away. We have been victorious in all the fighting here; prisoners is arriving here daily at this place. So, no more on this subject at this time. I can inform you that we are all in good hopes of victory when reinforcements are coming here at this place. I think the fighting will cease in a few days for awhile. Father is well at this time,Mother. I hope that we may live and return home safe again. Mother, I would like to see you all again, but I can't see you. Give my best respects to all my friends and tell them I will be glad to see them all. I want you to write to me the first chance you have and tell me how you are all doing. So no more at present. Only remain your true son until
