Daughter of Christine Payne and an unknown father. Helen was born in 1918, prior to the marriage of her mother, Christine Payne, to Gaither James Robertson on September 3, 1919. Helen was enumerated in the 1920 Census with the surname of Payne and continued to use the Payne maiden surname at the time of her marriage in 1937. Although Helen may have colloquially used the Robertson surname prior to her marriage (such as in the 1930 Census), no record could be located to show that her maiden surname was ever legally changed from Payne to Robertson.
