Eldest son of James Wilkerson & Lillie Jane Trainor Benefiel. In the Army during WWI, he served in France with the Supply Corps. He married Nora Wagner of Newton on 12-24-1921. They had three children: Velma Rose Buckman, Norman L, and Ernestine Hall. Owner of Benefiel Excavating, he brought the first track type tractor to Jasper County for excavating and dirt contracting.

Ernest L. (Stump) Benefiel, 73, of Newton, died at 8:55 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 1968, at Richland Memorial hospital in Olney following a long illness.

Funeral services were at Flagg funeral home with Rev. Gail Hines and Rev. Francis Michels officiating. Burial was in Riverside cemetery. Graveside military rites were conducted by Jasper Post No. 20 of the American Legion.

Mr. Benefiel was born April 10, 1895, in Jasper county, a son of the late James and Lillie (Trainor) Benefiel. He married Nora Wagner on Dec. 24, 1921.

Surviving are his wife; a son, Norman L. of Newton; two daughters, Mrs. William (Velma Rose) Buckman of Farmingdale, New York, and Mrs. Francis (Ernestine) Hall of Newton; three brothers, Everett of Newton, Otis E. of Monte Bello, Cal., and Elmer of Newton; four sisters, Mrs. Claude (Enola) Williams, Mrs. Eileen Cochran and Mrs. Lorraine (Marie) Smithenry of Newton and Mrs. Elma Heaton of Olney; and 12 grandchildren. One grandson is with the U.S. Army, stationed in Bangkok, Thailand.

Mr. Benefiel was a member of Grace United Methodist church, American Legion Post No. 20 and was a veteran of World War I.
