On December 21, 1853, Thomas married Sarah V. R. Watson in Camden, Camden County, New Jersey.
In 1860, Thomas was a Machinist in Camden, N.J. He and his wife now had two daughters; Florence, born in 1854 and Louisa, born in 1857.
When the American Civil War began, Thomas enlisted as a Corporal in the Union Army, Company D, 16th Regiment, US Infantry . This unit was composed of volunteers from the State of New Jersey.
Thomas was killed in September 1863 in the First Battle in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
