Ray Akers, 76, rites Thursday

Funeral services for Ray Akers, 76, lifetime Taylor County resident, were held Thursday, Jan. 12, at the State Street Shum-Novinger Funeral Home. Mr. Akers died at St. Francis Hospital In Maryville on Sunday. Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity.

Ray Akers, son of B. F. and Josephine Bannister Akers, was born Feb. 23, 1890 northeast of Gravity in Taylor county Iowa. He attended the public schools and grew to adulthood in the community where he was born.

In September 1911 he was united in marriage to Rilla Pfander and to them were born Darrell and Dorothy. His wife passed away in December 1914.

On October 25, 1916 he was united in marriage to Eunice Piper at the Methodist parsonage in Bedford with the Rev. L. P. Goodwin officiating. To them were born Lavelle, Lois and Youvaun.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother and two grandchildren.

Left to cherish memories are his wife, Eunice; a son, Darrell, and his wife Atha of Gravity; daughters, Dorothy Crowe, and her husband Edward of Colorado Springs, Colo., Lavelle Werner and husband Gerald of Carlsbad, New Mexico, Lois Whelan, and her husband Tim of Watson, Mo., and Youvaun Fine and her husband Fred of Bedford; one brother, Chester Akers, of Lenox; 24 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

In his youth he united with the Methodist Church at Sharpsburg.

For many years he operated a farm near Gravity until 1945 he moved to an acreage in north Bedford where he lived until 1965 when he moved to 304 South Court Street in Bedford where he had since resided.

He was a kind and considerate husband, father, friend and neighbor and he will be missed by all who knew him.
