Elsa was born Elsa Kristina Nilsson to Nils Peter Nilsson and Anna Sofia Persdotter. In 1911, eighteen year old Elsa traveled to England and there she boarded the steamship "Saxonia" at Liverpool on September 30, 1911. The 14,300 ton ship was built in Glascow, Scotland in 1899. It was 580 feet long and 64 feet wide and carried 1,964 passengers. The ship stopped at Queenstown, Ireland to pick up passengers then continued on to arrive at Ellis Island, New York, on October 10, 1911. In America, Elsa changed her surname to Nelson. She traveled to Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois to be near her brother John. On October 2, 1915, she married John Einar Nelson at Salem Lutheran Church. They lived in Rockford and there was born:
