James Buckingham was one of eleven children of John & Hannah (Brunsden) Buckingham. His great grandfather was William Buckingham, 1635-1701, who came arrived in America on 8 Aug 1682.

On 12 Jun 1755 st the New Garden Meeting in Chester Co, PA James married Mary Jane Chambers. She was one of eight children of Richard & Elinor (Miller) Chambers.

Information shows that the couple lived Chester County and New Castle Co while they were married. In 1890 their residence was on Orange St near 3rd in Wilmington.

James worked as a joyner and in his later years owned the Marshallton Grist Mill.

The couple had nine children:

3. Sarah*, 1759 PA - 1760 PA

7. Joseph, 1766 PA - 1767 PA
8. Joshua*, 1769 PA - 1854 IN, m. Rachel Piggott, 8 ch
9. Gloveyer*, 1775 PA - 1857 DE

*Named heirs when his will was written in 1786.

During the Revolutionary War James was 50+ and in 1778 is shown on a list of non enrollers in Capt Pierce's Company.

Through the years for a variety of reasons James is shown in various Quaker MM records: Concord, New Garden Kennett & Wilmington.

Bible records show that James was buried in this cemetery. It is not known if his wife Mary who died in 1802 is also buried here.
