Longtime journalist Davie Ann Browder passed away Thursday in a Waco hospital after a short illness.

Browder, 61, died at Providence Hospital in Waco after becoming ill with pneumonia, according to a family member.

She was born Jan. 30, 1947 in Groesbeck, Texas to the late Charles and Davie Means Browder.

Browder had recently moved back to her hometown to be closer to her son, David Browder LaFoy of Huntsville.

Browder graduated from Groesbeck High School in 1965 and attended Sam Houston State University in Huntsville.

A journalist, Browder worked as a television reporter for Channel 4 in Dallas in the 1970s. She also worked as a political reporter in Washington and Houston and covered many political figures including Charlie Wilson and George H. W. Bush.

She used to delight in talking about her days covering Washington politics.

The late Molly Ivins, a syndicated columnist, was Browder's roommate and friend of many years.

In the late 1980s Browder worked for the Palestine Herald-Press as a reporter, sports editor and as news editor in the early 1990s.

"I'm going to remember her smile," Herald-Press editor Angie Alvarado said. "She was a free spirit. She was a wealth of information, and she never hesitated to share that experience. Her passing is a big loss for journalism."

Likewise, Herald-Press news editor Beth Foley said that Browder had been a mentor in the early 1990s when Foley was starting out as a sports writer, fresh out of college.

"Davie Ann was fearless," Foley said. "She backed down from no one, and let no one intimidate her because she was a woman. She was a ground breaker in the early '70s as a woman journalist, and later as a female sports writer and editor.

"She really took me under her wing and I'll always be grateful."

Later she worked as an editor at the Jacksonville Daily Progress and as editor of the Castro County News in Dimmitt, Texas, where she won awards for news writing and front page layout from the Panhandle Press Association in 2004.

At the time of her death, she was employed at Insurance Licensing Service of America in Groesbeck.

Services for Browder were scheduled for 10 a.m. today at the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ron Bellomy officiating.

Browder is survived by her son, David Browder LaFoy, and a host of friends.
