George Squires Gillett was born 14 Dec 1841 in Ira, Cayuga, New York to Joseph and Jemima (Squires) Gillett. He was the 4th great grandson of Jonathan Gillett, immigrant (1630) and co-founder of Windsor, CT. His half siblings (Joseph was married first to Belinda Berry (1792-1837)) were part of the second phase of westward migration, spreading the family from upstate New York to Michigan and Kansas in the later half of the 1800s. George lost his mother at the age of 3 and his father at 6 and was raised by family friend Gregory White near his father's farm in Ira, NY. At about the age of 19 he moved to Burr Oak, Michigan and stayed with his half sister Sarah Garlock Trusell, daughter of Jemima from her first marriage. From here he enlisted in the 11th regiment of the Michigan Infantry, Company D under Major B. G. Bennett, organized at White Pigeon, Mich., and mustered in September 24, 1861. He was killed in Chattanooga on 25 Nov, 1863 at the age of 21. He left no widow.
