WILLIAM BERT PARKER IS MY FATHER -- RICHARD ALLEN PARKER

BOY, 12, WHO SAVED GIRL AND MOTHER, SAYS HE WAS SCARED, SO HE RESCUED 'EM

Youthful Blue River Hero Asserts It Was A Mean Job, But He Knew His Swimming Hole, If, as scientists say, the greatest heroes are those who perform their deeds in spite of being thoroughly scared, Bert Parker, 12 years old, is one of the greatest.

Yesterday Bert saved Mrs. G. W. Stockdale, 5323 Quincey Avenue, and her 12 year old daughter, Gladys, from drowning in the Blue River. The girl was swept into an eddy in the river and sank. Mrs. Stockdale plunged into the water after her and sank into a deep pool near the bank. Bert pulled the mother back to the bank, then swam to the girl and brought her safety on his back. Mrs. Stockdale suffered a heart attack as a result of their accident and was unconscious for several hours.

"I sure was scared yesterday," said Bert honestly today at his home, 5231 Brighton Avenue. "But I was more scared that Gladys and her mother would drown than I that I would, so I went in after them. "People sure do get heavy when their clothes get wet, don't they? I like to never got Mrs. Stockdale to the bank. Gladys was easier. Bert and Gladys have been child sweethearts for some time and Gladys was quite frank yesterday in admitting that Bert "was it" as far as she was concerned. Bert was different today about discussing his romance.

"Aw, Gladys is all right," he said casually. "She's fellin' fine t'day. Her mother fellin' all right again too. They're all all right."

Bert blushed faintly and let his discussion of the romance go at that. A boy of 12 doesn't care to have his amours become known to the public, because there is always some wise cracker to tease him about it.

Gladys's statement about their mutal admiration consisted in the declaration made last night that "Bert's just fine," accompanied by a telltale blush.

Bert is inclined to minimize the heroics in the rescue. "I been in that swimming hole so often," he said, "that I know all about it. I just got scared they were gonna drown and the first thing I knew they were both out on the bank."

Mrs. Stockdale's condition is reported much improved today.
