Sgt. Michael Christopher Weigand, York Springs, departed this life unexpectedly September 14, 2008 in a motorcycle accident while in the line of duty.

He was the son of Latimore Township Police Chief Michael E. Weigand.

An officer who served with both the Eastern Adams Regional Police Department and the Latimore Township Police Department, Michael lost his life in Tyrone Township as he was providing a police escort for a charity ride to benefit Latimore Township Park.

Sgt. Weigand was a full-time officer for the Eastern Adams Regional Police Department and worked part-time for the Latimore Township Police Department. He was in his third year of teaching the DARE program for fifth graders at Bermudian Springs Middle School.

He was the husband of Amanda L. (Gaver) Weigand and the son of Michael E. and Kimberly A. (Stebler) Weigand of East Berlin.

Michael was a 2002 graduate of Bermudian Springs High School and a 2003 graduate of the Allegheny Police Academy. He was a police officer with the Eastern Adams Regional and Latimore Township Police departments and was a certified crime prevention officer. He also taught fifth grade D.A.R.E. classes at Bermudian Springs School.

He was a member of the East Berlin Fire Company, the East Berlin Fish & Game and the Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club. "Junior" was an avid hunter, motorcycle rider, golfer, and a diehard Pittsburgh Steelers fan who loved spending time with his family.

In addition to his precious wife and loving parents, he is survived by the joy of his life, his daughter, Lanie N. Weigand; two sisters, Melanie N. Karpinski of Glenshaw and Erin Jo Bevenour of East Berlin; maternal grandparents, Jim and Carol Stebler of Pittsburgh; paternal grandmother, Shirley Weigand of Gettysburg; five nieces and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents.
