WRITTEN BY MABEL BRETCHES LENARD

My father was a farmer:
He watered the horses and slopped the hogs;
He milked the cows and fed the chickens.
He plowed the fields and sowed the seeds of grain;
He planted rows of corn and cut alfalfa hat.
He reaped the crios of wheat and oats;
He gathered and sheltered ripe ears of corn.
He blew warm pipe smoke into my aching ear
and rubbed my weary legs when they hurt.
He drew pictures on the painted kitchen wall -- of pigs with curly tails and broad-striped skunks.
My father was not wealthy with silver or lands
but he was rich in honesty and well earned respect; and he worked hard and finished every chore.
My father, the farmer.

I only met Uncle Homer one time at a Brtches's Reunion in 1960. He was eighty at the time. A bunch of us was playing ball and he slaunder up and asked if he could bat. He said he couldn't run but he sure would like to try and hit the ball. He got himself a bat and I pitched slowly under handed to give him a chance to hit the ball. He did and after hitting the ball a few time, he said thanks. With a twinkle in this eye and a big smile, he said, "Just curious it if could still hit a ball after all these years".
