Evelyn Anne (Hoefer) McMillan was born March 28, 1927 in Williams, Iowa to Jacob and Mabel (Maubach) Hoefer. She was raised and educated in Williams, graduating in 1945 from Williams High School. After high school she attended Americana School of Cosmetology in Des Moines, Iowa and graduated in 1947.
Evelyn was married in Minneapolis, MN on August 28, 1948 to John C. McMillan from Elgin, Iowa. Four children were born to this union. The couple made their home on the family farm in the Elgin area where Evelyn also operated her own beauty shop in their farm home for many years before moving into the town of Elgin in 1987.
Evelyn died Sunday afternoon, September 14, 2008 at Covenant Hospital in Waterloo after injuries from a car accident on August 31, 2008. She was 81 years of age. Evelyn was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union as well as helped with activities of the Elgin United Methodist Church. She loved traveling, attending activities of her grandchildren and great grandchild, and times filled with laughter with family and friends. She enjoyed outings with the ladies in her Red Hat group and morning coffee with neighbors and friends in Elgin. She will be remembered as an energetic 81-year-old with a mischievous smile, a kind neighbor and friend, a loving sister, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Evelyn is survived by her four children, two sons: John Michael McMillan and his wife, Kathy, Elgin, IA; Jeff McMillan and his wife Karen, Dunlap, IL; Cindy McMillan and her husband Mark Loughridge, Altoona, WI; and Cathy Molumby and her husband John, Elgin, IA; eleven grandchildren, one great grandson; five brothers: Lyle Hoefer, Williams, IA, Donald Hoefer and wife, Carol, Ackley, IA; Raymond Hoefer and wife, Maryellen, Maggie Valley, NC; Daryl Hoefer and wife, Joyce, Davenport, IA; Roger Hoefer and wife, Marilyn, Dunlap, IL; one sister, Kathryn Smith and husband Arlie, St. Petersburg, FL; and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. McMillan; one brother, Duane Hoefer; and two sisters: Dorothy Faber and Maxine O'Leary.
