Martha Lucinda Roberts Delaney was the wife of Samuel Sears Delaney of Belmont County, Ohio. She was born December 10, 1830 and married on October 23,1853. They continued to live in Belmont County, Ohio where Samuel farmed. While Samuel Sears Delaney served in the Union Army in the 43rd Ohio Volunteers during the War Between the States, Martha took care of their children. Eventually, Martha Lucinda and Samuel Sears moved their family south sailing down the Ohio, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Arkansas Rivers. According to family historian, Rosalie Delaney Little, they traveled during our country's centennial year, 1876. With them came several children ranging in age from early twenties to six years of age and all of their possessions and livestock, including two teams of oxen. They disembarked at Ozark, Arkansas. From there, they traveled approximately 18-20 miles through wilderness to their destination of about four miles southwest of Charleston, Arkansas. The Delaneys built their home on the top of the hill off what would later become the Marietta Road. Their children, were William Thomas, Martha Ann, Harriet E., Charles Simeon, Samuel Sears, Susan Mildred, Nancy, and Lyddia J. Delaney. Samuel Sears and Martha Roberts Delaney were laid to rest in the Western Star Cemetery in Sebastian County, Arkansas. Their graves were relocated to the Speegle Cemetery in Bloomer, Arkansas, in 1941, when Camp Chaffee was established in the area which included the old Western Star Cemetery.
