Helen Sarno Holdren, 86, of South Charleston passed away on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at her home following a long illness.

Born August 22, 1921 at Creek Mine near Henryetta, OK, she lived through the dustbowl days of the Great Depression before making her journey to Boomer, WV at age 16, and graduating from Montgomery High School two years later.

She worked for several years at Liggett's Drug Store in Charleston and retired from Leonard's Drug Store in South Charleston. In her way, she was a force of nature, and had a singular place in the hearts of her loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her husband William H. Holdren II; parents Alex Thorne Sarno and Mabel Tressler; brothers Lyle Thorne, Robert Sarno and Ernest Sarno.

She is survived by son William H. Holdren III and daughter-in-law Mary of Pendergrass, GA; son Roy Holdren and daughter-in-law Sharon of St. Albans; daughter Coweta Faulkner and son-in-law James of Teays Valley; grandchildren, Douglas Eric Westmill of Dennison, Ohio, Anne Katherine Bouldin of Dacula, GA, Shannon Faber of Kenna, Jaime Benedict of Buford, GA, Staci Hendricks of St. Albans, Sam Holdren of South Charleston, Sarah Wise of St. Albans, Mary Helen Herring of Buford, GA, Kelly Holdren of St. Albans, Alex Faulkner of Teays Valley; along with 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 16, at Keller Funeral Home, 1236 Myers Ave., Dunbar, WV 25064, with Rev. Scott Haynes officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Memorial Park.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, August 15, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
