DELIVERED MORE THAN 3,000 BABIES

Laura Ann Knowles, 57, of Concord, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at home in the care of family and friends from stomach cancer.

She was born in Gloversville, N.Y., on May 30, 1951, and grew up in the Adirondack State Park. She graduated from Albany Medical Center School of Nursing in 1973 and then from Frontier Nursing School in Hyden, Ky., trained as both a certified nurse midwife and a family nurse practitioner.

She started the Elizabeth Blackwell Women's Health Center at Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia in 1979. She also delivered babies at the Booth Maternity Center in Philadelphia and the Bryn Mawr Birth Center. She provided homebirths for the Amish community in Lancaster County.

She balanced career with her love of motherhood and community-building after moving to Concord, starting a local Girl Scout troop and hosting visitors from Russia as part of Beyond War efforts. She managed the Essential Experience, a personal growth workshop helping more than 350 graduates, worked to extend the welcome of the Unitarian Church and was a driving force behind the creation of the Concord skate park.

She invited a foster daughter into her home through Casey Family Services. She returned to full-time midwifery work at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic in Nashua in 1993 and then became a founding partner of Full Circle Midwifery Service in 2000 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Nashua.

She delivered more than 3,000 babies in her career and had a special touch with teenage mothers. The New Hampshire chapter of the American College of Nurse-Midwives honored her with a certificate of appreciation. Since 2006, she worked at the Concord Feminist Health Center in Concord and at The Doctors Office in Manchester.

She is survived by her daughter, Melia, 28, her son, Mackenzie Knowles-Coursin, 25, and her husband, David Coursin, all of Concord; her mother, Julia Wait Knowles of Gloversville, N.Y.; her sister, Pat Viola of Wells, N.Y.; her brother David Knowles of Lake Luzerne, N.Y.; her brother Richard Knowles of Gloversville, N.Y.; and her lucky dog, Spenser.

Memorial services will be held Saturday at noon at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Concord, 274 Pleasant St. in Concord.

In lieu of flowers, cards or gifts, please make memorial contributions to New Hampshire Women's Health Services/CFHC, 38 S. Main St., Concord 03301.
