Edward Bledsoe's actions as a Navy radar technician in World War II earned him a Purple Heart and a Silver Star for valor.
The longtime Fort Worth resident and retired property tax consultant died Friday after a long illness. He was 84.
"He would talk about the war fairly readily, if asked. He didn't volunteer it, and he never, never bragged," said Greg Davis, Mr. Bledsoe's son-in-law. "To me, he was a war hero with what he did."
Mr. Bledsoe was born April 10, 1924, in Ashdown, Ark. His family said he graduated from high school early to join the Navy. He served on the USS Tumult, a minesweeper.
After the war, Mr. Bledsoe earned an electrical engineering degree from Iowa State and worked in the engineering and property tax field. He and his wife married in 1963 and raised a family in Fort Worth. Mr. Bledsoe was also a longtime member of the Altamesa Church of Christ.
"He had shrapnel come to the surface for 20 years. He had headaches. Other than that, he lived a very average life," Davis said. "He was an exceptional grandfather and family man. That was the most important thing to him after he came back from the war."
Mr. Bledsoe is survived by his wife, Mary Virginia Bledsoe; daughters Gayle Faram and Holli Davis; sons Wes Jackson and Bryan Bledsoe; sisters Martha Sisler and Norma Bledsoe; and brother Norman Bledsoe.
