He graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1826 and became pastor of German Valley, N. J., Presbyterian Church in 1828. He served there 8 years and was then pastor of Washington Square, NYC Reformed Church for 41 years. He served as a trustee of Columbia College and as Chaplain-General of the Society of the Cincinnati, a postion his son Rev. Dr. Mancius Holmes Hutton held after him.
He and his siblings were "raised" by their sister Anna Maria from the time she was 17. See Memorial# 7942117.

On June 23, 1836, he married Gertrude Holmes, dau. of Obadiah and Sarah [Van Wyck] Holmes in the Garden Street Dutch Reformed Church in NYC.
